Fire extiguisher
A securely mounted 1kg fire extinguisher is an excellent insurance policy against the unthinkable. It should be mounted in such a way as to not be in the way of either the driver or passenger, but be easily accessible. The usual place to mount an extinguisher is just behind or in front of the passenger seat mounted to the floorpan. However, in race cars with stripped out interiors an extinguisher can be mounted pretty much anywhere.
Race seats
A race seat is a great way to keep you firmly seated whilst pedalling your car quickly around a track. Race seats come in all shapes and sizes to suit specific cars, and even specific driver sizes and shapes. Make sure that any seat fitted to your car is ADR (Australian Design Rule) approved, and that it's mounted securely on a seat rail designed for that seat and your car.
Harnesses
A harness is also a great way to keep you firmly seated whilst pedalling your car quickly around a track. Typically, harnesses consist of 5 points of anchor with two shoulder belts and a horizontal lap section being connected to a belt and coupling between the legs. Harnesses vary in price and specification, and also have an expiry date. Expired belts are significantly cheaper to buy, and can still be used for some beginner level competitions, but are not suitable for professional competition and may not be suitable for club level competition. Always check the date!
Roll bars/cages
A basic 'Roll Bar' or 'Roll Cage' is an excellent addition to increase the safety and strength of your car. Roll bars are generally only fitted to convertible cars and have a specific design criteria that must be met. A 'Roll bar' is different to a 'Style bar' or 'Style hoops' that are commonly found on MX-5's as a bit of bling and nothing more.
Roll cages for entry level competition have a main hoop with a diagonal brace, and straight back and forward legs that only have one bend from the vertical.
As with everything motorsport related, the more you spend, the better and more elaborate protection you get. Talk to manufacturers of Roll cages for your specific needs, and they'll be able to help you find the right solution for your requirements.
